A few items as a taster...
We've added a few items to get you going...can you find out the dates of any other items on this tapestry panel? The origins of many buildings are outside this panel's timeline but they still exist today.
1270: The Old House in Rochford
The Old House in Rochford (the oldest secular building in the area, dating back to 1270.
1740/1808: Rayleigh heritage
Rayleigh windmill (dated 1809) and Dutch Cottage (1740: smallest and oldest council house in UK).
1873: Ashingdon School
Ashingdon School, founded in 1873. Like many local schools, it opened its doors to WWII evacuees.
1914: Talbot-Quick's waterplane
South Fambridge remembers the flying-boat experiments there in 1914 using Talbot-Quick's waterplane.
1940s: WWII pillbox
A Second World War pillbox on Wallasea Island and other areas of the district.
1953: Coastal floods
The 1953 floods badly affected Foulness and other coastal areas, with loss of life and severe damage.
1956: Sister Jean Ward & jaundice
In 1956, Sister Jean Ward made observations in Rochford hospital that led to the development of phototherapy for newborns suffering from jaundice.
1969: Lesney's Matchbox factory
Lesney's Matchbox Toy factory started in Rochford with workers bussed in from local towns and villages.
2018: The Bull Inn at Hockley
The Bull Inn at Hockley, subject to an intense fire in 2018 but now restored in its original style.
2020: Coronavirus & rainbows
Finally, there is the rainbow, displayed in windows nationwide during the coronavirus pandemic that locked down the country in 2020. This demonstrated people's thanks to the NHS and frontline workers, as well as being a symbol of future hope.
