Saxons, Danes & Normans
1016-1080
1016: Changing the course of history
Eadric betrays Edmund and joins Cnut, changing the course of history
1016: Cnut the Great
Cnut defeats the English army, which was led by King Edmund Ironside
1020: Ashingdon Minster
Cnut orders the building of a Christian chapel at Ashingdon to commemorate those who fell in the battle. Cnut appoints one of his priests, Stigand, to be the first minister at Ashingdon.
1066: Harold and William
Stigand attends the coronation of King Harold and then, later in 1066, that of William the Conqueror. Although Stigand was now Archbishop of Canterbury, he could not officiate at either coronation as he had been excommunicated and Kings needed an 'approved coronation'. Instead, Ealdred, Archbishop of York, performed both coronations.
1070: Odo commissions the Bayeux Tapestry
Archbishop Stigand is shown on the Bayeux Tapestry at Harold's coronation (perhaps to emphasise that William disagreed with Harold's claim to the crown and add justification to the invasion). The tapestry was commissioned by William's half-brother, Odo, Bishop of Bayeux. Bishop Odo held land in Barling, Beckney (once part of Ashingdon and Hockley) and Stambridge.
